Questions about surplus funds & unclaimed money
What are foreclosure surplus funds?+
When a property sells at a foreclosure auction for more than the debt and costs owed, the extra money is called surplus or excess proceeds. It is usually held by the court, county or trustee until a valid claim is filed by the former owner or another party with a legal interest.
What are tax sale overages?+
When a county sells property for unpaid taxes, money above the taxes, interest and costs may be claimable. In Tyler v. Hennepin County (2023), the U.S. Supreme Court held that a government cannot keep a former owner's surplus equity without a way to recover it.
Can I claim the money myself?+
Often, yes. Courts, counties and state unclaimed property programs let owners claim directly, usually at no cost. We always tell you this first. Some claims involve heirs, liens or court motions, and that's where research and help can save time.
How much does AssetBridge charge?+
The eligibility review is free and there are no upfront fees. If you choose to work with us, any fee is set out in a written agreement before work begins, follows your state's legal limits and is paid only from funds you actually receive.
How do I know this isn't a scam?+
Never pay upfront to learn about money owed to you. We name the agency holding the funds, show you the public record, and you can verify it yourself. Read our guide to spotting recovery scams. Read the guide.
How long does a claim take?+
It depends on the agency. State unclaimed property claims often take weeks. Court-held surplus may need a motion and a hearing. We give you a realistic timeline once the funds are verified.
